Although the first game of shantae for the Game Boy Color it was a critical success, commercially it was a flop for its distributor Capcom. On the WayForward side, this didn’t discourage them from trying again with a sequel, which of course this time they did plan for the Game Boy Advance under the title of ‘Shantae 2: Risky Revolution‘, before being cancelled.
Among the plans of this also known as Shantae Advance it was planned to include six new towns, four new mazes based on the four seasons, several minigames, transformations, the possibility of swimming, flying, jumping between planes in front and in the background of the scenarios, among others. According to the plot, Risky Boots, Shantae’s quintessential enemy, built a giant pillar in the middle of Sequin Land to rotate the kingdom at her will.
This time Capcom didn’t feel like the financial rush and declined to distribute the game. In the absence of another interested company, WayForward opted to cancel the game. The following years were discussed the possibility of bringing Shantae back on Nintendo DS under the title Shantae: Risky Waters. The lack of a distributor once again took its toll on them and they suffered the same fate as the failed version for the GBA.
In the middle of 2023, Matt Bozon, director of shantaehas revealed WayForward’s plans to continue the development of Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution. The game will be released until the beginning of 2024 on a wide variety of unconfirmed platforms at the moment. It will likely come out on a Game Boy Advance cartridge just like previous and current generation consoles. The game will even support four players via the GBA Link Cable.
Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is located between shantae (2000) and Shantae: Risky’s Revenge (2010). The genius half must protect Sequin Land from the plans of Risky Boots, who uses an underground device to rotate the kingdom’s scenes. Now Shantae has to take control of that same technology to “turn” the pirate’s plans against her.
