The young Holmes has to deal with an otherworldly threat in this game.

When dark forces are at work and a Cthulhu cult is on the loose, it takes Sherlock Holmes himself to put an end to it. That’s probably what the Frogwares development studio thought, which brought out the crossover title Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened in 2006. The game, which received a remaster in 2008, is now getting a complete makeover and the remake will be released for all major platforms next year.

It’s all about this: Frogwares developers have some experience with both Sherlock Holmes and the Cthulhu Mythos. Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One was released last year. The Sinking City, for example, is one of the titles in which cosmic horror plays a role.

Coherent crossover: But more than 15 years ago, Frogwares dared a crossover with The Awakened, in which they set Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s popular investigators on an HP Lovecraft-inspired Cthulhu cult. The Ukrainian studio is busy developing the remake during the ongoing war and launched a Kickstarter campaEsports Extrasto fund it.

What awaits us in The Awakened?

In this title we step into the shoes of a young Sherlock. The action is set a few years after Chapter One and Sherlock and Watson initially just live together in a flat share. They only become the cult detective duo in the course of the story, in which Sherlock is initially only supposed to investigate a missing person case.

But if it stayed that way, there would be no otherworldly horror at work here. Holmes must discover that there are beings he would never have dreamed of – and a dangerous group of possessed cultists who worship them.

In terms of gameplay, there’s exactly what you’d expect from a Holmes game: investigation. But the typical madness that plays a role in Lovecraft’s work should also come into play. The Awakened will be released in 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC.

When I heard about the remake, my first thought was, “What? Why don’t I know the original game?” Cosmic horror always makes me prick up my ears, and of course Holmes is the perfect man to investigate a Cthulhu cult.

I was really excited about The Sinking City, Frogware’s Lovecraft-inspired open world game, because it conveyed the dark mood perfectly for me and didn’t take my hand too much when investigating. That’s why The Awakened is high on my wish list.
