Sony believes that PS5 can surpass a historic sales record for the first PlayStation
Today we have learned that PS5 It has already sold more than 38.5 million units worldwide, something that is not surprising considering that we have been talking for some time about breaking sales records in markets such as the United States, Europe or the United Kingdom. Now Sony has locked in its sales estimate for the current fiscal year, hinting that it believes its next-generation console will can break a historical record set by the first PlayStation.
According to Sony, PS5 can sell 25 million units in this fiscal year (that is, from March 31, 2023 to the same day in 2024). The only console from the company that has achieved a similar sales volume has been the first playstation, which in fiscal year 1998 managed to sell 22.6 million units. To get an idea of what this means, we must take into account that in the previous fiscal year, which ended on March 31 of this year, PS5 has sold 19.1 million units worldwide.
PS5 could be the first Sony console to sell 25 million in a year
No PlayStation console has managed to reach 25 million units sold in a year: ps2 came close by selling 22 million in 2002, ps3 fell far behind in its best year, with 14.4 million units sold in 2010, and not even ps4 surpassed the brand’s first console when it sold 20 million units in fiscal 2016. Currently, the first playstation is the sixth best-selling console in history with a total of 102.4 million of units sold from its launch to the cessation of its manufacture.
In that ranking, PS5 It is ranked 17th with 38.5 million units sold since 2020. The last fiscal quarter managed to sell 6.3 million consoles, coinciding with the stabilization of the stock around the world.
