SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Review

There is no doubt that SpongeBob has been a very popular and beloved character within our culture. Proof of this is that he is also one in the world of video games, with several titles developed over the years. Many of these games are usually entertaining and action-packed, but they are mainly focused on a teenage audience. That’s how THQ Nordic brings us to SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, a title that wants to follow in the wake of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom.

The aforementioned game had a remaster with the subtitle Rehydrated which we reviewed last year. The Cosmic Shake can be considered a sequel since it maintains some of its same playable bases. However, it is more condensed and does without some mechanics such as the multiplayer facet, although it is still a good game, it just feels more focused on children.

a magical jolt

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, follows our yellow friend SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick who, at a Bikini Bottom fair, get some magical bubbles from a gypsy girl without knowing who she was dealing with. These bubbles unleash chaos when the entire city is engulfed by a cosmic hole, also taking all the characters in the series with the exception of Bob.

While Patricio is turned into a version of a floating balloon, the duo must face challenges to recover parts of the city and with it all the inhabitants. The game’s plot is developed as if it were just another episode of the series, or specifically one of the character’s movies, which makes it easy for fans to get carried away.

Characters from the series, such as Plankton, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and some new ones also appear in the game and play important roles in the story. They make the story at least entertaining. However, in the end we find the absurd sense of humor that the series is known for.

Bikini Bottom and Other Worlds

As for the gameplay itself, players control SpongeBob as he travels through different worlds and faces strange beings in the form of enemies to recover lost characters and city locations. Meanwhile, Patrick serves as an advisor and indicator of what to do next, limiting his role to just that. The game is a 3D platformer that offers a variety of challenges in each level.

Each world has a different theme from times like the Old West, a movie studio, prehistory, etc. In each level we will have to carry out a main mission and other secondary ones to obtain coins, Medusa Jelly and the same jellyfish as collectibles. They have their particular challenges, as well as mini-games like grabbing the jellyfish juice jug, for example.

Bob will gain unique abilities that can be used to overcome the challenges of the game. Among the abilities are double jump, Zelda Breath of the Wild-style glide, stomp, and a few others. These abilities also allow you to revisit past levels to obtain secrets and new rewards.

As for the combat, we will basically attack the enemies with our jellyfish net. However, they hardly offer a challenge as the game feels very easy. We will have various enemies, although they are still easy to defeat, because even if we lose all our health, we will return to the nearest Check Point.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Review

Graphically, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is colorful but suffers from the same drawbacks as the Nintendo Switch such as short draw distance and an overwhelming dominance of pink. Although it looks and runs better than other games like Crash Bandicoot. On some occasions it suffers slowdowns or frame stops, although nothing serious, yes.

The sound is what we can see in any episode of the series, such as the sound effects of blows, falls, appearances, etc. About the voices it is dubbed in English, French, English, Brazilian Portuguese, among others and includes the voices of the actors from the USAversion, who do a good job representing their characters.

Verdict

Overall, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is a fun and entertaining game that perfectly suits the cartoon’s style of wacky humor. The story is interesting and full of twists and turns, and the characters are fun and true to the series. However, it can be easy for more experienced players, as it hardly offers any difficulty challenge.
