Starfield – The “SciFi Skyrim” in the gameplay trailer
As part of the Xbox Games Showcase, Bethesda Softworks also revealed the final mysteries surrounding Starfield’s gameplay. With an extensive presentation by studio boss Todd Howard, many activities, locations and details were revealed that will await us for the release on September 6, 2023.
Countless, vast worlds
We’ll mine resources with a laser on the more than 1000 Starfield worlds (greetings from No Man’s Sky), complete missions and discover ‘unexpected things’ – either in first or third person. We select the planets of the solar systems on space maps, which are somewhat reminiscent of Mass Effect. Fast travel via specific landing points is possible here.
As an example of the worlds we can explore, Howard cites New Atlantis (United Colonies) – the largest city Bethesda has ever created in terms of size, residents, and quest opportunities. This contrasts with the Freestar Collective room, which is more reminiscent of the lawless Wild West feel.
Lots of customizing
Starfield’s character editor was also shown in detail. In addition to the visual adjustments, we can also choose our personal backgrounds, which provide us with three starting skills such as medicine, security or persuasion.
The spaceship with which we jet through space can also be freely created. Depending on the component and expansion, we can add new features – the changes also affect the visuals of the ship and we can customize it to our liking. Several spaceships can be added to your own fleet and adjusted, even if we simply steal them from opponents.
Overall, Starfield offers five different skill trees, covering combat, science, social, physical, and technology. Another example of a skill: Xenosociology, with which we can control extraterrestrials with our minds.

Action-packed fights
We’ve seen Starfield’s combat system in previous trailers, but now it’s a full rundown of what’s possible. In close or long-range combat, we take on human, extraterrestrial or mechanical opponents who use force of arms to defeat them. A kind of jetpack on our back lets us ‘jump’ and target enemies from above.
Depending on gravity, we can float on this path almost constantly. However, if there is no gravity at all, we have to be careful with the choice of weapons. Normal firearms throw us back with the recoil, laser guns, for example, do not have this disadvantage.
Starfield will be released on September 6, 2023 for Xbox Series X/S and can be played directly at launch via Game Pass.
