The highly anticipated Starship Troopers: Extermination launches in early access format this coming May 17.

The early access release provides a small taste of the first-person shooter, said developer Offworld Industries, creator of the Squad, Post Scriptum and Beyond the Wire simulators.

You play as a soldier as part of a 16 player co-op against the famously nasty alien insects of Starship Troopers. You must complete objectives, gather resources, build and defend your base, and then escape to the extraction point in squads of four.

There are three playable classes here (Assault, Support, and Defense) and a class progression system that allows you to unlock new weapons, equipment, and perks.

As for the aliens, expect five types of bugs at the early access launch (Drone, Warrior, Gunner, Plasma Grenadier, and Tiger Elite). The threat of bugs increases during missions, so as you progress, larger and more dangerous enemies enter the fight.

The action takes place on a large map with five unique zones. Offworld Industries said it expected hundreds of bugs on the screen, which is just what you’d want from a Starship Troopers game.
