When I look at the Steam Deck, I think of how far away gaming has come over the years. Gone are the years of having a GameBoy without a backlit screen that ate batteries as if there were no tomorrow. Of course, the newest hardware and the most retro games can coexist thanks to the GB Operator from Epilogue.
And yes, the Deck does not have any type of reader beyond the SD card. There is no space for cartridges, CDs or DVDs, making it a device that can only play digital games, at least natively. that’s where they come in its ports and its connectivity.
Launched in 2021, the GB Operator is a USB adapter that, in conjunction with the brand’s software, allows you to connect your GameBoy cartridges to any computer in order to play them no need to extract any data from them. Just plug it into your computer, pop in the cartridge and play, and now it’s also compatible with Steam Deck.
Obviously, it uses an emulator to be able to work. Using the mGBA open source software, one of the best (if not the best) to be able to play titles from all GameBoy generations. Of course, this will be done through the proprietary program of Epilogue, called Operator.
Of course, it may not be the most comfortable option to play in the subway or on the bus, but combine this peripheral with the dock of the Steam Deck is, without a doubt, a very interesting option for retro fans who want to enjoy their games in the most comfortable way possible.
