Team Ninja believes that a more linear Souls-style approach still has a lot of potential.
If you have played Nioh or Nioh 2 surely you know the Team Ninjathe expert team in action games that has planned the launch in 2023 of another title with a similar conception called Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and that is once again betting on a Souls-style proposal with a high degree of difficulty.
However, many wonder if the mammoth open world of Elden Ring will influence the conception of Team Ninja games and we could see a less linear conception in the future. In an interview with VGC, director Fumihiko Yasuda and producer Masaaki Yamagiwa they rule out forgetting linearity in favor of large open worlds.
We are not looking for an open world experience as suchfumihiko yasuda“Elden Ring did a great job with the open world experience. But with Wo Long we do not seek to create an open world experience as such. We’re focused on what we do well at Team Ninja, which is creating mission-based action games with a lot of intensity focused on those levels where you’re fighting,” says Yasuda.
“That’s the kind of approach we have, instead of large scattered areas“, he continues. “There’s going to be a lot going on in every mission you take on: lots of action, lots of enemies, and lots of things to sink your teeth into. So we want to focus on what we do very well.”
There are many possibilities in this formatMasaaki YamagiwaFor his part, Yamagiwa also believes that the more linear structure should not be left behind. “We think that there are still many possibilities to do new things in the format and structure based on missions”, he explains, to later highlight the morale system that evolves as we defeat more enemies, which allows us to more freely explore the different areas depending on the challenge we want to face.
Nioh is not coming to Xbox
Asked about bringing Nioh to Xbox consoles, Yasuda says he has no news about it. “Currently, not much chance to have Nioh on Xbox platforms, but we hope that Xbox fans will enjoy Wo Long and look forward to the release of that game. That’s probably all we can say about it at this point.”
Since Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is the closest release on the horizon for Team Ninja, we invite you to read our colleague Adrián Suárez’s gameplay impressions after having already tried it. Title will premiere in early 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S, although it will be available from day one on Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft’s subscription service.
