The creator of Dragon Ball is bringing a new anime series in 2024 – the film was already a box office hit

If you’re interested in more stories from Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, you should be well served with Sand Land. As those responsible have now announced, there will even be an anime series next year that you can watch with an active subscription to Disney+.
What is Sand Land?
- Sand Land is a manga that was originally published in 2000. It only includes one edition.
- It is a video game in development at Bandai Namco for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A release date has not yet been set.
- The film of the same name celebrated its premiere in Japan on August 18, 2023. A release in Germany is still pending. The film has a running time of around 105 minutes and grossed $2.3 million (in Japan only!) (via Box Office Mojo).
An anime series is now to follow, which will be broadcast on Disney+ in spring 2024. Sand Land: The Series is intended to pick up the content from the movie, but contain cuts that didn’t make it into the film.
In addition, the original work by Akira Toriyama will be taken up. There will also be a new story that follows on from the film version. The story was created specifically for the anime series by the Dragon Ball creator!

That’s what Sand Land is all about
What actually happens in Sand Land? Sand Land is about the same creator as Dragon Ball, but they have nothing else in common. So you shouldn’t expect Son Goku and Piccolo to suddenly appear around the next corner.
We follow the events from the perspective of the demon prince Beelzebub. He lives in a desert world of the future where water is becoming a scarce commodity. Both humans and demons suffer from the extreme water shortage. A greedy king grabbed the remaining water.
So Beelzebub teams up with his assistant Thief and Sheriff Rao to search for the mysterious Phantom Lake. He is said to be somewhere in the desert. On their journey they have to deal with dragons, bandits and the king’s army.
The voices of the individual characters may sound familiar to you from some video games. Beelzebub will be voiced by Mutsumi Tamura, known as the voice of AKI from Street Fighter 6. Kazuhiro Yamaji will voice Sheriff Rao. He previously appeared as Cid Highwind in Kingdom Hearts II.
Completing the trio is Cho, who may look familiar to some as Aratoron from Phantasy Star Online 2.
Akira Toriyama has his hands full. In 2024 there will not only be a new anime series for Sand Land, but also for Dragon Ball: New series for the cult anime starts in 2024 and lets Son Goku and Vegeta shrink again
