Shinji Mikami explains that the change in perspective when aiming has inspired games like Gears of War.
The Resident Evil franchise has managed to carve out a Esports Extrasntic niche for itself in the video game world thanks to a premise that not only hooked us on its survival-horror, but also incorporated innovations really important to the industry. The use of the camera in Resident Evil 4 enters this group of highly relevant additions in the medium thanks to that change of perspective which put the player’s gaze over the protagonist’s shoulder every time he aimed to shoot.
We didn’t plan to do something innovative, but in the end everyone says we did itMikami ShinjiThere are not a few developers and players who have applauded Mikami Shinji for implementing this innovation. However, the creator of the saga does not consider this change to be so important: “felt naturalas strange as it may seem,” explains Mikami in one of the videos on the official Resident Evil channel on YouTube (via VGC). “We did not plan to do something innovativebut in the end everyone says we did it.”
“For us personally, we just thought the angle was better. We weren’t trying to do something new or innovative, there’s nothing like that.” Below, the creative recalls early industry reactions to his change of perspective on camera, including Masahiro Sakuracreator of Kirby and Super Smash Bros. applauding his idea and the team at Gears of War admitting that they were inspired by her for their game.
“It’s weird,” Mikami continues. “It doesn’t really hit you, even with all that praise. You’re not like ‘I did it!’, it’s a bit more like ‘This should work i guess‘”.
Be that as it may, there is no doubt that Mikami managed to introduce an unprecedented perspective in the industry. In addition, we will soon meet this change of camera in Resident Evil 4 Remake, a version with a date set for the March 24, 2023 that already presents some differences with respect to the original delivery. However, from Esports Extras we have not missed the opportunity to think of 6 things that we would change in Resident Evil 4 Remake and one that we would never touch.
