The Last of Us almost got a second DLC and the story was already set
The Last of Us almost got two DLCs.
With Left Behind, the first The Last of Us has already received a very successful DLC that tells us more about Ellie’s past and thus enriches the story. You could almost think that would tell everything about the main characters, but as game director Neil Druckmann has now revealed, there should actually be a second DLC whose story was already finished.
Second DLC should focus on Ellie’s mother
In an interview with Variety, Druckmann chatted a little out of the box and also talked about content from the HBO series that does not exist in the game. When asked which new element in the series he’s most looking forward to, he answered Ellie’s mother, Anna. When we meet Ellie in the game, she’s already dead, so she doesn’t appear in the main story. But Druckmann still wanted to dedicate her own little story, which almost became a short film or DLC:
I had written a short story after we shipped the game. It was supposed to be an animated short, but nothing came of it. There was a moment where we almost made it into DLC, but that didn’t materialize either.
Druckmann does not explain exactly why the plans for the short film or DLC did not materialize.

After all, he now gets a second chance with the HBO series. As he also explains, he spoke to Craig Marzin, the co-writer and co-executive producer of the series, about the plans for Ellie’s mother Anna and he was immediately enthusiastic.
As we already know from trailers, Ellie’s mother will have an appearance in the series. Ashley Johnson, who has already lent her voice to Ellie in the games, was chosen as the actress. According to Druckmann, this is a poetic way of finally bringing Anna’s story to life.

But we’ll have to be patient a little longer before we can finally experience the story of Ellie’s mother. Druckmann does not name a specific episode, but at least states that Anna only appears “very late” in the series. Maybe we’ll get a flashback with Ellie’s mother and the Firefly leader Marlene right before the end?
