The Last of Us: Joel’s decision is difficult for you too, but the right choice

You guys seem to agree with Joel.

You guys seem to agree with Joel.

Danger! This article spoils the ending of The Last of Us Part 1.

With the remake of The Last of Us, Joel is once again faced with the decision of whether to choose Ellie or a cure and thus humanity. Not an easy choice, but it wins the game in favor of Ellie.

Whether that would be the right decision (also in relation to a real scenario) is debatable. In order to get closer to the answer, at least in relation to the game, we wanted to know from you in a survey how you would have decided if you had been Joel.

The result is good for Ellie, but bad for humanity

  • Yes, Ellie would just be too important to me! – 63% with 2,016 votes
  • No, sometimes you just have to make sacrifices. – 21% with 676 votes
  • I dont know. – 15% with 490 votes

Even if it means lying to Ellie, most of you stand by Joel’s decision. Whole 63 percent would save Ellie and thus prevent a possible cure. On the other hand, only 21 percent would sacrifice them for the good of mankind, even if it is difficult. Only 15 percent of you just couldn’t make up your mind, which is understandable considering the difficulty of the choice.

We will see how Pedro Pascal as Joel in the HBO series will have to deal with this decision in 2023 on Sky or WOW. Here is the first trailer for the series:

Your thoughts on the difficult decision

As can be seen in the comments, you have considered your decisions well. One reason why you would choose like Joel is clearly parental feelings. Whether they are biological children or foster children, you could not sacrifice them:

When I think about it, anyone would want to sacrifice my daughter for any reason, never. I would have gone even further than Joel and destroyed all traces.

Valok88 extensively justifies Joel’s decision by saying that the world of The Last of Us is tough. There everyone fights for themselves and their loved ones. Also, it would be no wonder Joel saves Ellie as he considers her a foster daughter. He couldn’t bear to lose her as well, which I’m sure many of you would feel the same way if you were in Joel’s place. In addition, Valok88 adds another important argument:

There is absolutely no evidence that the whole project with the vaccine would have worked at all. So yeah, I would have shot every single one in that damn hospital too. […] If you as a gamer in front of the TV look at everything rationally, then yes, Joel acted selfishly and he would have been better off sacrificing a human for the “cure”. But in this one moment. In this world. Nope, sorry.

Another aspect is the question of whether humanity deserves to be saved at all. metal_marv strongly doubts it:

In a post-apocalyptic and cruel world like TLoU, I would most likely agree that humanity doesn’t even deserve to be saved. In a world like this, you are more than ever close to yourself.

But it is also interesting that some of you have taken your real circumstances into account, which is why you do not give yourself a great chance of being able to make a choice at all. Like Kamaluk:

I’m not as fit as Joel and would have either screwed up or been late. So I wouldn’t even have the chance to make a choice.

But even if Joel’s actions are somehow justifiable, some of you still see them as wrong and selfish. So it remains a difficult and controversial decision, whether in game or in real life.
