In the night from Sunday to Monday, the series adaptation of The Last of Us started on Sky/WOW. In the pilot episode you have already met many of the important characters. Maybe you went a bit too fast when it comes to the Fireflys – especially if you’ve never played the game. What exactly is this group that initially holds Ellie captive? What do these people want? We introduce you to the faction.
Do not worry, Spoilers for the first episode only: In this article we will only go into the events of the first episode and give you some background information about the Fireflys. We avoid spoilers for later events.
These are the Fireflies
The series sees Ellie, the protagonist of The Last of Us, for the first time as a prisoner of the Fireflys. You will also get to know Marlene, the leader of the group. Those who know the games have already learned quite a bit more about the Fireflys, but those who haven’t played them might be a bit confused.
The Fireflys are a resistance group that opposes the strict military rule in the quarantine zones. These safe havens, to which survivors retreat, have been formed across the United States. They are led by the so-called FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency), which provides the best possible security, but at the same time rules with an iron fist. As we experience in the series, everyday life in the zones is pretty tough for normal residents. That’s why resentment spreads again and again – and some join the Fireflys.
They are the antagonists of FEDRA and are trying to seize control in order to bring about change, with little success so far. As the name suggests, the symbol of the resistance movement is a stylized firefly. In the series, you can see a firefly graffiti being painted over in the zone. The motto of the group is, also fitting to the insect: Look for the light.
