The Last of Us: The series could still get the perfidious fungal spores
It’s possible that fungal spores and vines will coexist in the series in the future.
The series adaptation of The Last of Us sticks very closely to the game story, but also brings some new elements. This includes, for example, a network of mushroom tendrils that replaces the perfidious spores from the original. This change has caused mixed reactions from fans. But it is not yet certain whether the fungal spores will be banned from the series universe forever. As revealed in an interview with series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the final word on this has yet to be spoken.
That’s why we haven’t seen any spores yet
Mazin and his colleague Neil Druckmann spoke out on the subject in an interview with ew.com. Mazin explained about the spurs:
Part of the problem with spores is that you encounter them quite often in game, although not as often as people think. And if there were so many spores and they were airborne, the infection would go even faster. It’s hard to imagine anyone escaping her, and people would probably be wearing masks all the time. […]
Druckmann summed up these concerns by stating that the way the game was presented just didn’t match the series’ higher level of realism.
Spurs could still come
However, Mazin clarified that this consideration has only ensured that we haven’t seen any fungal spores on the show before, but that doesn’t mean we’ll never get to that point.
He even teases that the element might come back after all and makes the – certainly consciously – mysterious statement: “Maybe we have a plan.” Druckmann also remains very vague and only hints that discussions were held about the possibility of introducing the spores after all. It also sounds through that they could probably only have an appearance in the second season.
The new trailer gets you in the mood for episode 3, which will be available on Sky/Wow on Sunday night:

The Last of Us Series – In the third installment we finally meet a popular character
We’ll have to be patient for more specific information. For now, I (Samara) wrote in my column why I’m missing the mushroom spores from the game in the series, although I generally appreciate that the adaptation dares something new. If you want to know how the second season is doing, you can read more about it in this news. Our overview of all episodes of the current first season can be found here.
Would you be happy if the series makers found a way to make the spurs come back?
