The second part of Final Fantasy 7 appears on two discs.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has returned to Summer Game Fest with a new trailer. The Open World JRPG will no longer appear in 2023, but in early 2024. As a consolation, there were new gameplay scenes from the game to see.

With the announcement of the new release date, the information appeared that the role-playing game will appear on two Blu-ray discs. As a result, “Two Discs” developed into a new trend in social media within a few hours.

Want all the announcements from Summer Game Fest? In the two-hour event, plenty of new games were shown and there was interesting information about already known AAA blockbusters. Including a first gameplay trailer for Alan Wake 2, the new game from Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama and from Sony we finally got to know the release of Spider-Man 2.

In our detailed overview of the event you can read all the information again at your leisure.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on two discs: A nostalgia kick for fans

Actually, this shouldn’t be anything new for the fans. The original Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released on four (later three) discs and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was also released on two discs.

However, this was the PS or PS4 version of the games. The discs of the previous generations of consoles could not provide as much storage space as the new PS5 Blu-ray discs.

What does that mean? The discs of the PS4 could store up to 50GB of data, the PS5 discs come up to 100GB. Since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth comes with two discs, the game will be larger than 100 GB. This is probably also the reason why the title will no longer be released for PS4.

Do I have to swap discs mid-game? In the PS1 era, it was still common to switch discs at certain parts of the story. But since the PS4 this is no longer necessary.

Many other games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 also came on two discs. With them, one disc was used purely for installation, and the other was then used for gaming. Thus, the discs no longer had to be exchanged in the middle of the game.

Others are concerned that loading the massive data pack will cause the PS5 console to become a jet:

Others make fun of that kind of thing on the PS3 wouldn’t have happened. In the PS3 era, double-coated Blu-rays were advertised, which made changing discs unnecessary.

Others spin crazy theories: the two discs could be for different timelines stand. One for Zack, the other for Cloud.

Either way, many of the players are looking forward to the release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and are glad that they got to see anything new about the game at all. So we can now look forward to early 2024 when the JRPG will be released exclusively for PS5.

What do you think of the release on two discs? Would you prefer a smaller scope or don’t care about the number of discs?
