Just two days after the announcement of a new animated The Witcher film, named Sirens of the Deep, new details have emerged. Enough to completely satisfy fans of the series with the irreplaceable Henry Cavill. It is the least we can say.

Some details about The Witcher Sirens of the Deep

So, this series takes place at a key moment in the history of Geralt of Rivia. Inspired by the short story A Small Sacrifice by Andrzej Sapkowski, it tells the story of the monster hunter’s mission to calm a conflict between humans and mermaids.

Netflix has confirmed the production of this film for 2024. Doug Cockle, voice of Geralt in the video games, will reprise his iconic role. He will be accompanied by the actors of the series, Joey Batey and Anya Chalotra, playing Jaskier and Yennefer respectively. This spin-off seems strongly connected to the live-action series. And this is rather good news for the general public.

The plot is taken from The Sword of Destiny, Sapkowski’s second collection of short stories. Considered a sequel to The Witcher series. A Little Sacrifice takes place around 1244 in the game’s timeline. Shortly after the meeting of Geralt and Yennefer in the first season of the Netflix series.

A big link with the live series

The story introduces a romantic element, albeit one-sided, that could enrich the dynamic between Geralt and Yennefer. However, as the first episodes of The Witcher cover several eras, it is only at the start of season 2 that the main plot takes shape. The animated spin-off takes place approximately 20 years before these events. Additionally, it was referenced in the Netflix series: in season 3, Ciri sings a ballad related to this story.

This film marks an expected return to the universe of The Witcher before the arrival of a new Geralt in season 4. Indeed, Henry Cavill, who played Geralt of Rivia in the first seasons, will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth from from season 4. This announcement was made in October 2022, where Cavill confirmed that he would be leaving the series and Hemsworth would be replacing him. It’s possible that creative differences between the actor and Netflix played a role, although this remains speculative. Meanwhile, Netflix continues to monopolize the universe.
