This action RPG sends us on a ghost hunt and I’d like to get started right away

A ghost hunt set in 1695, fast-paced combat, two playable characters, a tragic story with tough choices that impact the plot – if you nodded enthusiastically at those points, you should definitely keep an eye on Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. The role-playing game is in development at DON’T NOD, the studio behind Life is Strange, but also Vampyr Late 2023 for PC, PS4 and Xbox Series X/S appear.

With the ghost hunter duo against supernatural powers

There was a lot going on at the Game Awards this year. There were trailers for big blockbusters like Death Stranding 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. In case you missed Banishers between the many announcements, you can catch up on the trailer here:

That’s what Banishers is all about

The two people you see sitting together at the table in the trailer are Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith. As you might have guessed from the scenes, the two are both a couple and a ghostbuster duo. On the official website of publisher Focus Entertainment, we learn that the last mission of the two went terribly wrong and Antea was injured so badly that she became a ghost herself.

The story is about the two looking for a rescue for her. In doing so, they battle their way through a fantastical version of historical North America where supernatural creatures roam.

This is what we know about the game mechanics: The trailer only shows a short fight scene, but the website also reveals that we can play both Antea and Red and use weapons as well as magic and special powers in the fight against the supernatural. In addition, the studio typically relies on a strong story focus again and wants to give us the power to decide the fates of the characters with our decisions.

The trailer for Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is one of my personal Game Award highlights. From the action-packed combat to the ghost-hunting story, everything about it appeals to me. But I’m also particularly excited because the trailer immediately reminded me of another game that I really like, namely Vampyr. With this title, I realized that DON’T NOD can not only do pure story games like Life is Strange, but also action-packed RPGs.

Vampyr offers some really nice chilling urban fantasy and lets us play a doctor who saves people and at the same time is a vampire who… well: sucks people dry. Antea’s fate sounds like a similar conflict to me and I really hope that the title follows the same path, can grab me with its moral decisions as well and has a solid framework of action.

How do you like Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden at first sight? Are you up for the ghost hunt?
