This Xbox shooter doesn’t have good reviews, but 7.5 million people have played it
Doesn’t look particularly nice and was only received moderately, but it was still a success.
There are games where success is inevitable. And then there are always games where it’s actually the other way around. All the more gratifying when these titles are crowned with success despite their special focus on a niche. Like this Xbox shooter here, for example, which (not only, but also thanks to Game Pass) has been played a surprising amount.
Played by 7.5 million people, High on Life was a hit
That’s what it’s about: The people behind the bizarre alien shooter with talking weapons and lots of humor à la Rick and Morty are happy about their veritable Game Pass hit. In total, over 7.5 million people have played High on Life. You can see what the wild ride looks like in video game form here:

That High on Life was quite a big Game Pass title has been a fact for a while. It was already reported at the end of December 2022 that the shooter was even the biggest Game Pass hit of the year and a record title. In fact, it’s the biggest Game Pass launch of the year and the most successful third-party game launch on the service.
What the makers say: Now we also know what it all means exactly, with numbers. Across all available platforms (PC, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, Game Pass and Cloud), High on Life has now “surpassed more than 7.5 million unique players worldwide since its mid-December launch.”
Despite mixed reviews: High on Life only got a mediocre rating from the critics. The very special, sometimes exhausting humor hits a nerve with fans, but not with many others. On review aggregator sites like Metacritic, High on Life has average test ratings below 70, but user scores well above 7.
What’s next? That is not officially certain yet. Given the success of High on Life, fans are naturally hoping for a sequel, but no new game has yet been announced by developer Quanch Games.
