Many may feel that the Lord of the Rings license is not being properly treated in video games lately. Poor games like The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the cancellation of other projects, and the restructuring of studios within the current licensee’s owner, Embracer Group, did not augur a quiet era for Middle-earth. Fortunately, that may change very soon.
Free Range just announced that The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria is coming out on sale on PS5 and PC on October 24. It will be a digital release, in principle, although there will be a physical edition for the Sony console on December 5. Return to Moria follows the adventures of a ragtag group of Dwarves who intend to reopen the Mines of Moria and drive out the orcs that inhabit it (while pocketing a good amount of gold and gems).
Alone or in cooperative mode, the dwarves will have to descend through procedurally generated levels while improving their equipment and digging for treasure.
“Each adventure into the depths will bring unique challenges and opportunities through the use of procedurally generated environments, creating nearly endless possibilities as players search the innermost depths of the Dwarves. As they delve deeper into the depths, the dwarves will have to make sure that their metal is prepared to face the dangers that await them, making resistant armor and fine-tuned weapons capable of protecting and defeating all manner of goblins, arachnoids or more mysterious enemies that they can find.Excavate the mysteries of the Misty Mountains, extract precious metals prized by dwarves, rebuild and reignite forges long gone cold, and learn the secret of the Shadow that lurks within.”
