Vegeta and Goku will no longer be the protagonists of Dragon Ball Super

During a significant number of Dragon Ball story arcs we have seen Goku and Vegeta face multiple adventures, combats and all kinds of curious events within the universe of the series; so, for many of the fans it would be difficult to imagine a world without both saiyans or, at least, with little presence in history.

Despite the fact that both Goku and Vegeta have taken their respective paths after adulthood and also evolved not only as fighters but also made decisions that would define the course of Dragon Ball, certainly the series needs to take a break from several decades of endearing stories of Goku and Vegeta.

So that, now it is the turn of Goten and Trunks to take the reins of the path that their parents left behind and rise to the occasion, just as Goku, Chi-Chi, Vegeta and Bulma had to do at the time. And, as Akira Toriyama’s series has confirmed, the next story arc will put an end to the tradition around these characters.

Through an episode of the livestream of Tamashii Nation, a series dedicated to anime-themed franchise products, the publisher in addition to V-Jump magazine (by Shueisha publisher), Victory Uchida, shared some interesting illustrations of Goten and Trunks just as we can see them in the next arc of Dragon Ball. Both characters are in their adolescent stage and their appearance reveals superhero costumes reminiscent of Gohan’s “Great Saiyaman” suit. According to the publisher, the suits have their own masks, which surely implies that Goten and Trunks will have to fight evil without showing their true identities.

Why Goten and Trunks?

The fact that the two best-known Saiyans of the popular series have left the spotlight to their children implies a major change for the Dragon Ball franchise. In this sense, it is not the first time that the series has given a turn to its narrative, since Vegeta’s change from villain to hero in Dragon Ball Z it was one of the most significant events for the audience. However, the creators of the series kept the Saiyan prince fighting by Goku’s side whenever he had to fight an enemy that was dangerous for the peace of his world.

It should not be forgotten that before the decision was finally made to choose other characters to represent the iconic series, Future Trunks eventually became the protagonist of some arcs., but even so, Goku and Vegeta were still the center of attention. On the other hand, Goten, Trunks’ best friend, had a secondary role in most of the Dragon Ball arcs since his appearance.

To some extent, Trunks and Goten showed off their skills and friendship in the Majin Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z, when they both performed the Fusion Dance and they transformed into the curious character known as “Gotenks” which, in fact, has a style similar to Vegeta’s, but with the clothes of the inhabitants of the Metamor Planet.

For reasons like the above, some fans already saw the news coming the new role of Goten and Trunks; although, of course, the relationship also helped the creators continue with a great family history of heroism.

For its part, Dragon Ball Super has had an indefinite pause since August, but the first chapter of his new story arc is scheduled for December 21. Also, the good news is that not only Goten and Trunks will be the stars, but this list includes Gohan and Piccolo, who will probably have the role of mentor due to their advanced knowledge in relation to the young protagonists. And this could be confirmed after they starred in the latest Dragon Ball movie, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
