When is the next Mario game coming? Nintendo statement raises hope
Mario and Luigi will soon even be seen on the big screen, but a new game is still a long way off.
Super Mario is one of Nintendo’s most important brands. So the latest statement from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto doesn’t really come as a surprise. According to him, Nintendo is always working on Super Mario. It sounds like the next title might not last too long. It would also be timely.
Good news: Nintendo “always working on Mario,” says Shigeru Miyamoto
The time would be favorable: For the first time in several decades, a real Super Mario movie is coming to theaters. So it would make sense to publish a suitable game. The same goes for the newly opened Nintendo theme parks, although unfortunately they don’t exist in Europe yet.
Here is the trailer for the film:

In an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto also explains to Esports Extrasthat Nintendo is always working on a Mario game. However, the time is simply not ripe for revealing anything about it. When it did, of course it would happen.
That sounds pretty meaningless at first, but of course it can also be interpreted benevolently. The scope for this is given: Nintendo may have had an advanced, new one for a long time Super Mario game in the pipeline, which is just waiting to be published. As last seen in the Metroid Prime remaster:
How much time is there usually between new Super Mario games?
The last Super Mario gamethat Nintendo released was the Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury Switch double pack. That was in 2021 and only the second part Bowser’s Fury was new.
The original Super Mario 3D World was released in 2013. Super Mario Odyssey came out in 2017 and then of course there was the Super Mario 3D All Stars Collection 2020.
If we leave out offshoots like Paper Mario, Super Mario Maker and Co., the overview looks like this:
- NEW: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (2021)
- Super Mario 3D All Stars (2020)
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe (2019)
- NEW: Super Mario Odyssey (2017)
- NEW: Super Mario 3D World (2012)
In the past, there were usually more between the really new offshoots of the main series four to five years. That would mean that it could be another two years or so before the next new Mario game.
On the other hand was Bowser’s Fury isn’t that extensive either like many other Mario games and was released together with a new edition. Accordingly, a real main game might be closer than we think.
So the chances are not bad that Nintendo will take the opportunity and take the currently even bigger Mario hype with them. However, a shadow drop like the Metroid Prime remaster is extremely unlikely for a Mario title. So, for better or for worse, we’ll have to wait for an announcement.
Do you think Nintendo will be releasing a proper new Mario game anytime soon, or is it still a long way off?
