To say that Wii Sports has its place in the history of video games it is not to speak in vain. The Wii title, which reached many markets along with the console, was a real revolution due to its simple premise and excellent gameplay. For this reason, almost two decades later, many players fondly remember a title that fell in love with several generations.
Wii, which was born as a console that sought to convince all kinds of audiences —as we told you in the review of the history of Satoru Iwata— found in Wii Sports a perfect ally. for the story remained the incredible binomial they formedan incredible alliance that captivated millions of players.
However, at this point, it is mandatory to ask yourself a question: why Wii Sports was able to change the history of video games? The answer, incredible as it may seem, is almost as simple as it is intuitive: for his way of understanding the environment.
A millionaire idea that Nintendo did not trust
In early May, following the launch of Disrupting the Gamethe book by Reggie Fils-Aimé, came to light multiple news that the world did not know. Among them, he highlighted a story starring Fils-Aimé himself and Shigeru Miyamoto, the well-known creator of Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and many other franchises that we know so much.
At the epicenter of this story was found Wii Sportsthe title that brings us together today, and a decision that would change the future of an entire generation. Fils-Aimé, meanwhile, was very sure to release the title in a bundle with Wii; Miyamoto, for his own, could not be more against it. And in the end, fortunately for the players, overcame Reggie’s opinion and this one got away with it. The result? Over 80 million copies sold altogether. Some figures, in short, of absolute record.
“Essence Nintendo” to make history with Wii Sports
Beyond this story lies a unique proposal that knew how to triumph for its value. In fact, such was its success that it had an expansion that expanded the initial proposal and, more than a decade later, with a return -unfortunately not so triumphant- that confirmed what was expected: everyone fell in love with Wii Sports.
Due to its premise and gameplay, the sports title was an idea accessible to all types of players. Thus, it was common for grandparents, parents and grandchildren to get together in the houses where Wii arrived to enjoy a unique experience together. Thanks to the popularity of its sports (boxing, baseball, bowling, golf and tennis) and the particularity of its gameplay —betting on motion control to the detriment of traditional controllers—, everyone could enjoy it.
breaking the molds
Wii Sports was therefore “Pure Nintendo”. Since its inception, the Big N has stood out for being an innovative company with one goal in mind: offer the funniest titles on the market. However, this has not left other aspects – such as the narrative or the evolution of various parameters – aside. And that, in short, has served to make history your way.
Thus, there are several moments in which Nintendo emerged as the star company in the sector, the one that points the way to others and, torch in hand, guides them through the darkest places. He did it in the 80s with the NES, he repeated it in the 90s with the SNES and, as on many other occasions —as we told you in our special dedicated to nintendo games that changed the industry—, repeated the play with Wii Sports.
And you, do you think that Wii Sports was one of those games capable of making history? What anecdote could you tell us about the iconic Wii title? Whatever your experience, we will be happy to read about it in the comments.
