“The Halo community is pissed” is something you can say in both 2012 and 2022. I have no doubt that 343 Industries have good things, but that of pleasing the fans is a pending issue that the Washington team has been dragging since it took the reins of Microsoft’s star franchise —story and narrative, functionalities, decisions in mechanics and desEsports Extrasor identity of its PvP modes are some of the threads that have been tormenting fans and authors alike for all this time.

It is not a question of lack of talent, resources, or even turning a deaf ear to the comments of his followers: rather, from this side of the screen we usually attribute the matter to a clumsy management in the development. Perhaps that explains the lack of some elemental features in Infinite after almost a year of life (having gone through an equally long delay) or the cancellation of split-screen co-op, among many other things. But regardless of the reason why these things happen, the truth is that an unfortunate series of events related to this issue took place on networks a few days ago.

Bonnie Ross, until now head of 343 Industries, announced on her personal Twitter account that she was leaving the studio, a move that led to the restructuring of the studio’s management leadership. The decision was justified by a family matter of a medical nature, although I could not help but feel some disgust inside because the news came less than a week after a fan posted a nearly 10-minute video gathering some far-reaching content creators’ thoughts on the current state of Halo Infinite and the series in general—needless to say the footage radiated negative energy as if to give rise to an evil spirit—in which some ugly extremes were reached, such as calling for layoffs for specific individuals.

The comments of a few do not represent the entire community at all, that is clear; but I also saw it as a window to a reality as harsh as the feeling of widespread discontent and deep that floods the fans. Even if the facts I mention are not related to each other, they still help us to ask ourselves what it takes to restore the lost glory of the Spartans.

The Master Chief and company are their own thing, one with quite concrete needs for their own formula.The Halo universe no longer enjoys the discovery factor that it had in its early years, neither the idea of ​​playing a shooter with a controller nor that of entering an online game is new; and each new installment straddles industry trends—mature, dark, personal stories for the campaign; eSports for multiplayer. None of that matches the real identity of Halo, the game that was conceived with a walking green armor and the social experience of setting up a LAN in which to stay until the embarrassing hours of the morning shouting among colleagues. The Master Chief and company are their own thing, one with quite concrete needs for their own formula. A bit like “the Fortnite of 2001”, so to speak.

I’m glad there are new bosses at 343 Industries because they have the power to deal with that existential crisis that the IP goes through, redirecting the team’s human and monetary efforts into something more profitable, more in line with the interests of that enormous residual public that remains faithful to the Master Chief after his golden age. Sci-fi arcs that feel fresh and desEsports Extrasphilosophies that are guaranteed to be fun both the first and the fiftieth time you get behind the wheel.

With Joe Staten there and this new opportunity, I’m even moderately optimistic about it. That 343 Industries understands what is good for its franchise is not that difficult, probably they themselves (and we are talking about half a thousand people) are the first to yearn for the same as us. Now, having reformed the steering group after a decade of stumbles, we’ll see if the problem was with Ross, O’Connor and others or maybe it was something higher up. It gives me that something is wrong when beyond Halo, Xbox studios drag so many problems when starting their projects.

With the flagship walking a tightrope and other major studios mired in creative limbo (how long will we have to wait to see Starfield, Everwild or Perfect Dark? Do we have enough major titles in the meantime?) maybe the question isn’t “sprint yes/no” else where decisions were made like making Infinite’s PvP a hero arena in the style of Overwatch, we understand; or why the game was shown as it was at that E3 2020. And why did they happen. That’s what’s really scary.
