Xbox boss admits they didn’t release many games in 2022 and it’s something to improve
Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, has accepted criticism of a somewhat disappointing 2022 in terms of releases first partyand points out that going forward they need a constant stream of great games for Xbox -and therefore, Xbox Game Pass-.
This week the event Developer_Direct gave the clues to some of the top Xbox games for the next few months, including redfall, Forza Motorsport, Hi Fi Rush Y Minecraft Legendsto which are added Starfield -with an event of its own later on-. Last year, however, it only had one internally developed title: penance of Obsidian; As Dusk Fall Created by an external team, relaunched Age of Empires, force horizon 5 received content and Grounded I left Game Preview, but Spencer thinks it wasn’t enough.
“Our commitment to the fans is that we need a rate of release of great games that people can play on our platform and we did not do enough in 2022, there is no question. And fundamentally that falls on me, I am the head of the business, ” Spencer tells IGN. He points out that achieving this number of pitches is something he and his teams take seriously and “2022 was too little in games”.
The importance of showing games and dates
Spencer also comments that after months asking for patience for news, it was time to show the games with their dates -or at least, approximate dates-. “I hesitate to talk about the next releases because I know there is community fatigue when we say ‘wait a bit’. It’s one of the reasons why it’s been nice to be able to launch Hi Fi Rush during the event.” Tango Gameworks’ game had not been previously announced.
“We had things like penance, which came out in November and was a great game, but we need to do more. When I see Minecraft Legends, redfallthe work we are doing with Forza Motorsport and one of my favorite series, The Elder Scrolls Online… I think it was important to present games and confirm dates“.
