HAchubby wundert sich ueber Geschenk

Korean streamer HAchubby has been on Twitch for five and a half years. At the end of February 2024, Twitch discontinued its services in Korea and left the streamer an unusual farewell gift.

What's the deal with saying goodbye? Like many other Korean content creators, streamer HAchubby was surprised by the news in December 2023 that Twitch was shutting down its services in Korea. The VoD function had previously been abolished there: the server costs were simply too expensive.

HAchubby has been streaming regularly on Twitch since 2018. Her streams are aimed at an international audience: HAchubby speaks English and even adjusted her stream times so that she could reach American viewers.

With the discontinuation of Twitch in Korea, HAchubby and several other Korean content creators were faced with the decision of starting over on another platform or leaving the country to remain on Twitch.

On February 27, 2024, Twitch finally suspended its service in Korea and said goodbye to some popular Korean streamers with a small gift. However, the gift left HAchubby puzzled.

A gift from the past

What kind of gift was that? In her stream, HAchubby showed off merch she received from Twitch. Among them was a Twitch purple cap with the streaming platform's logo as well as a box with stickers, keychains and other little things in the Twitch design.

However, among the gifts, it was a calendar that particularly attracted attention. While browsing through it, HAchubby noticed that the calendar was from 2022 and is therefore no longer really usable. She burst out laughing and shouted, “They gave me a 2022 calendar for shutting down Twitch Korea!”

What's behind the gift? It seems like Twitch's Korean division simply gave away old merch inventory to give streamers a souvenir. The box with the stickers, for example, comes from an event in 2021.

While age plays a relatively minor role when it comes to key rings and ballpoint pens, the outdated calendar, on the other hand, seems very strange.

On Reddit, where the clip was discussed in the streaming community r/LivesstreamFail, some users still see a benefit in the calendar: The present at least provided content; a current calendar would hardly have produced such an entertaining clip .

Another user simply writes: “My first thought was why would you give someone a calendar in March, but it was actually so much worse.”

What's next for HAchubby? After HAchubby spoke about her unclear future in December 2023, US streamer Mizkif contacted her and offered to help her get a work visa.

The streamer has now joined the content gang in Austin, Texas and is currently planning her move to the States. This means the streamer can continue to broadcast even after Twitch Korea ends.
